Kiva Update!

So to date we've been pretty productive in our classrooms.  So far the kids have produced:

    1.  An expository essay
    2. A fundraising advertisement
    3. 3 - 5 page research paper
    4.  A presentation for a specific borrower
    5. We have set up a school team account on Kiva.org:

6.  We will be choosing a borrower tomorrow in class and hopefully making a loan tomorrow as well.
7.  Lastly, MSG Varsity will be coming into our classroom on 3/30 to videotape our class and interview some students for a segment on their program.  Cool.

Project Update

So our project is coming along.  We introduced our classes to Kiva.org.  We are going to include the whole 10th grade, so all of the teachers are on board, and our principal loves the idea!  The first task of the assignment is an expositional essay explaining the kiva.org site.  Next up is a fund-raising brochure, and then finally a loan/borrower choice and a research paper on the industry and region.  Lastly, the kids will each present his/her borrower and the class will vote on which loan to make.  We'll set up a school account so as the loans are paid, we will continue the legacy.  We're going to apply for a grant from the Hurricane Foundation, so hopefully we'll have some additional funding.

Research Paper Ideas -- Kiva.org

This is kind of my idea, although I haven't figured out an interactive component.

Kiva Micro-loans

Research Project:

Kiva.org – micro-financing

       1.     Have students verify trustworthiness of the organization – how do we do that?
       2.     Determine amount of money we could raise to loan
       3.     Peruse site:  Find a loan you would like to make.
       4.     Research the country – write a paper.     Argue the point for your loan.
